Summer Job: Exhibition Assistant

The Justina M. Barnicke Gallery at Hart House is seeking an Exhibition Assistant from May 28 to August 31, 2012, to assist in the research, organization and coordination of our exhibition programming. The programming includes a touring exhibition, gallery exhibitions and the permanent collection. The position is a 37.5 hour work week and commences in May, 2012, with a salary of $14/hour.

The ideal candidate for the position of Exhibition Assistant will have a background and demonstrated knowledge, through university education and volunteer or previous employment, in the history of contemporary Canadian art and international movements from the 1960s onward. S/he will be working towards a BA and/or working towards an MA or PhD and returning to full-time studies in Fall 2012 in the field of art history with emphasis on contemporary art and Canadian heritage.

The candidate will bring excellent communication and organizational skills, as well as the ability to work independently and in a team, with an emphasis on critical thinking, a great sense for detail and information accuracy and enthusiasm for contemporary Canadian art and history. The candidate will have proven experience with detailed historical research and is able to process information in a variety of formats, use databases and present findings. Project and event planning experience is a definite asset as is prior administrative and art handling experience in a public or private gallery context.

HART HOUSE FINANCE COMMITTEE STUDENT MEMBER

Hart House’s Finance Committee provides opportunities to learn valuable skills in financial management by participating in conversations and decisions about budgetary and financial policies and issues. We welcome students from all disciplines (it’s an opportunity for students enrolled in finance-related degree programs to bring theory to practice; and we also provide educational training sessions for students without a financial background).  Skills acquired through involvement as a committee member can be applied to both individual and organizational financial management.   The Finance Committee mandate applies to all financial aspects of Hart House with particular focus on the following:

  • Participate in advising the Board of Stewards on policies that affect the financial management of the House
  • Analyze the annual budget
  • Make recommendations for the House’s long-range plans
  • Consider capital expense requests
  • Monitor financial operating performance
  • Oversee the annual audit process
  • Participate in the Audit Sub-Committee

TALKING WALLS

Talking Walls is a well-travelled space that provides an opportunity for groups and individuals to exhibit socially conscious, thought-provoking art works or documentary images. The exhibition space is open to students, community groups, members of the university community and the public who are interested communicating ideas, asking questions, and creating dialogue around contemporary issues through their work. Talking Walls seeks to build understanding and awareness by giving voice to challenging and engaged works.

Student Project / Call for Submission

Site Specific Project at Hart House

The Student Projects sub-committee is the site-specific installation curatorial project of the Hart House Art Committee, fostering the means and space for one University of Toronto student to create an installation.

Details: The Hart House Student Projects call invites submissions from any current University of Toronto student at any level of study. Projects of all mediums are welcome, and may be an indoor or outdoor work that is site specific. The selected proposal will be awarded up to $2,000 in project assistance. Works will be installed for one year in duration at the University of Toronto St.George campus.

Deadline:  Dec 15, 2011, 11:59pm
Submission: Include descriptive Proposal, images, budget, bio and CV.

Artwork featuring interior rooms. Experiment with themes of closure/openness,  ligh/dark. Where does the subject stand within the “room” of an artwork? Feel free to play with the perception of immediate objects enclosed in an area.

STATIC ENERGY

rbor Room Exhibition - Call for Submission
A formal challenge aimed at defying the stillness and spatial limitations of tow-dimensional visual media. The goal is to achieve a highly dynamic, energetic effect without the use of merchanics or video. Energy may or may not be the subject of the piece.
