Food

Sustainability, affordability, accessibility and equity are all values that we consider to be at the core of what we do at Hart House. A longstanding leader in food security, Hart House hosts a number of programs, events and workshops that explore the complex relationship between food and these core values as they relate to society, culture and the environment. Created to engage students and the community, both in the kitchen and the classroom, Hart House food programs strive to expand our appreciation of food and the complexity of this "basic" necessity.  Our Commitment to Sustainability

WORLD FOOD DAY

World Food Day takes place every year on October 16th to commemorate the day when the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was founded. Working with numerous University and Community partners, Hart House hosts events to promote World Food Day, heighten public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO CAMPUS AGRICULTURE PROGRAM

Get Growing!

The University of Toronto Campus Agriculture Project (UTCAP) is dedicated to unifying, coordinating, and empowering small-scale food producers across all three UofT campuses.

The Project

Community gardens, rooftop bee colonies, and secluded mushroom logs are all part of our agro-network. These grassroots, student-led initiatives embody our community's increasing engagement with local, organic, sustainable food production. By growing in underutilized spaces around the university, we are working to reimagine the form and function of our on-campus environment.

UTCAP members grow food that is consumed by volunteers, incorporated into Hart House menus, served up by the Hot Yam! food collective, and donated to the UofT Food Bank. Planting only heirloom and native plant varieties will help cultivate a biodiverse learning and living environment for the entire UofT community.

UTCAP is comprised of autonomous growing projects rooted in particular colleges, student unions, academic departments, and student groups. We also work collaboratively with Hart House and the UofT administration to maintain a series of gardens across St. George campus.

The Vision

All UTCAP initiatives create opportunities for student leadership, academic research, and skill-sharing on campus.

In partnership with Hart House, UTCAP is also working to become a centre for food-related events and programming. Urban agriculture addresses key issues surrounding food security, sustainable development, food policy, and community engagement. Working directly with food broadens our awareness of its longstanding cultural, political, and ecological ramifications.

GALLERY GRILL

Experience "lunchtime lotus land" (Toronto Life) weekdays, or join everyone on Sundays for "the city's best brunch" (Joanne Kates 2006 Restaurant Awards) at Hart House's Gallery Grill.

The restaurant operates September through June (closed holiday weekends), serving "beautifully modulated food that doesn't have to show off to be noticed" (Gourmet). The Grill's dining room boasts a vaulted ceiling, hand-painted stained glass windows, and great birds-eye views into both Hart House's oak-panelled Great Hall and its sculpture-studded quadrangle.

And Chef Suzanne Baby's comforting yet cosmopolitan cuisine has won her a devoted following among Toronto diners, along with accolades from internationally recognized food and travel publications.

"Chef Suzanne Baby’s lunchtime masterpieces are worthy of the artful surroundings of Hart House"
Toronto Life, March 2009

"Veteran chef Suzanne Baby’s seasonally shifting card reflects local bounty at its best."
NOW Magazine, March 2009
