Jazz at Oscar's Presents the Parker Abbott Piano Duo

Details: On Friday, February 17th at 9pm, Jazz at Oscar’s presents The Parker-Abbott Piano Duo: two pianists with strong backgrounds in jazz, classical, and pop. Teri Parker and Simeon Abbott first played together in Abbott’s song-writing project, but with over 35 years of keyboard experience between them they soon found common ground on their shared instrument. The duo released their debut album Gallery in March 2011 and have performed at some of Canada’s top jazz clubs including the Upstairs in Montreal, Café Paradiso in Ottawa and the Rex in Toronto. Most recently the duo has teamed up with drummer Mark Segger, adding a new layer of rhythm to the piano duo setting.

Teri Parker, a graduate of University of Toronto’s Jazz Performance program, also participated in the 2009 School of Improvised Music workshops in Brooklyn where she had a chance to work with some of New York City’s top improvisers including pianist Fred Hersch. In 2008 she participated in JIMS: Summer Studies for Jazz and Improvised music in Salzburg. Not only a dedicated performer, Teri is also the co-owner of the Annex Academy of Music, an in-home teaching school. She takes every opportunity to participate in creative musical projects, playing at clubs, showcasing her original music, and playing with some of the Canada’s top improvisers.

Simeon Abbott is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and improviser most active in Toronto's jazz, improv and pop/rock communities. He completed a bachelor's degree in jazz studies at Humber College under the tutelage of Brian Dickinson and Dave Restivo, as well as Pat LaBarbara, Don Thompson, and Kieran Overs. He has appeared on over a dozen recordings as a sideman and has released 4 albums as leader or co-leader. Borrowing from odd-meter groove to swing to ECM-like lyricism to free improvisation, his playing seeks to abolish the typical.
